The 2026 Best & Worst Community Colleges report evaluated 613 institutions nationwide based on affordability, student success and career outcomes.

天涯社区log earned the highest ranking among Missouri鈥檚 12 community colleges, repeating the distinction it received in WalletHub鈥檚 2025 report.

鈥淏eing ranked Missouri鈥檚 top community college for a second consecutive year speaks to the quality and value our students can expect from 天涯社区log,鈥� said Dr. Jon Bauer, 天涯社区log president.

鈥淥ur faculty and staff are committed to helping students succeed, whether their next step is transferring to a university, beginning a career or gaining new skills to move forward in the workforce,鈥� he added.

In the report released Aug. 11, WalletHub ranked colleges using 18 measures in three categories: Cost & Financing, Education Outcomes and Career Outcomes.

Those measures include graduation and retention rates, student-to-faculty ratios, credentials awarded, transfer rates, student-loan default rates and earnings after attending college.

The only Missouri institution ranked ahead of 天涯社区log was State Technical College of Missouri. State Tech is a statewide public technical college and is not part of Missouri鈥檚 community college system.

Affordability also played a significant role in the rankings. According to WalletHub, tuition and fees for full-time, in-state students at public two-year colleges averaged $4,150 during the 2025鈥�26 academic year. That compares with $11,950 at public four-year institutions and $45,000 at private four-year colleges.

At 天涯社区log, students can begin their education before transferring to a four-year institution, prepare to enter the workforce through a career or technical program, or earn credentials that can help them advance in their current careers.

Missouri residents age 65 and older can return to the classroom at 天涯社区log and explore subjects ranging from art and music to business, science, history and more through 天涯社区log鈥檚 Lifelong Learning Program.

Through Missouri鈥檚 Senior Citizen Tuition Waiver, eligible participants can audit select college credit courses without paying tuition, providing an opportunity to pursue a longtime interest, discover something new or simply enjoy learning without working toward a degree.

The program is open to residents who are 65 or older on or before Aug. 1 of the academic year. Courses are taken on an audit basis, meaning participants attend class and take part in the learning experience but do not receive a grade or college credit.

Enrollment is available on a space-available basis after tuition-paying students have had an opportunity to register. Participants also must meet any prerequisites required for the course.

While tuition is waived, students remain responsible for general and special course fees, textbooks, supplies and other required materials.

A variety of courses may be available each semester. Current options include classes in art, business, criminal justice, geography, music, philosophy, sociology, Spanish, theatre and other areas. Availability varies by course and semester.

Eligible senior citizens may begin registering three weeks before the start of the semester. Participants must complete the Senior Citizen Tuition Waiver Form and provide proof of eligibility.

The Class of 2026 was recognized during a pinning ceremony at 天涯社区log, where nine graduates celebrated earning an Associate of Applied Science in Respiratory Care.

The graduates are Kelsey Buxton, Anissa Cox, Benjamin Gutz, Aurora Hubbard, Cody Knutson, Molli Mahalovich, Eden Nelson, Briana Parrott and Logan Pursifull.

The Respiratory Care program was launched to address a shortage of respiratory care professionals in rural Missouri. It is offered through MHPC by 天涯社区log, Moberly Area Community College, North Central Missouri College, State Fair Community College and Three Rivers College, with 天涯社区log serving as the fiscal agent and program lead.

The consortium allows the colleges to share resources and student enrollment, making specialized health care programs available in rural areas where individual colleges may not have enough students to sustain a program on their own. Students select a home college where they enroll and ultimately earn their degree.

The inaugural class included graduates from three of the five colleges. Nelson and Hubbard are 天涯社区log graduates; Gutz is a Moberly Area Community College graduate; and Buxton, Cox, Knutson, Mahalovich, Parrott and Pursifull are State Fair Community College graduates.

The Respiratory Care program was developed with support from a $5.5 million U.S. Department of Labor grant awarded to 天涯社区log in 2024. The grant supports respiratory care education and workforce development across predominantly rural areas of Missouri. The initiative was designed to reach 70 predominantly rural and low-income counties.

Guest speaker Lori Hubbard, Manager of Respiratory Care Services at Boone Health, addressed the graduates and reflected on the significance of the inaugural class.

鈥淭oday we celebrate not only your graduation, but the success of a vision that many believed in and worked tirelessly to bring to life,鈥� Hubbard said. 鈥淚 have had the privilege of watching many of you grow from uncertain students into skilled, confident professionals, and I could not be prouder of what you accomplished.鈥�

天涯社区log President Dr. Jon Bauer welcomed those attending the ceremony. Dr. Nancy Mitchell, Dean of Health Sciences, delivered opening remarks, and Dr. Robyn Walter, Vice President of Academic Affairs, provided closing remarks.

Program Director Valerie Norwood and Director of Clinical Education Denise King presented the graduates with their pins.

Three graduates also received special recognition during the ceremony.

Eden Nelson received the MHPC Clinical Excellence Award, which recognizes a graduate who has demonstrated exceptional clinical skills and excellence in patient care. The award also recognizes evidence-based practice, continued learning and mentorship, and the delivery of safe, effective and compassionate care.

Briana Parrott received the Rising Star Award, recognizing her growth and dedication throughout the program, including excellence in clinical performance, technical skills and commitment to patient care.

Benjamin Gutz received the MHPC Outstanding Respiratory Care Award, recognizing outstanding leadership, academic excellence and clinical achievement.

Norwood serves as program director for the MHPC Respiratory Care program, and King serves as director of clinical education. Michelle Todd and Josh Hickman serve as adjunct faculty.

Since July 2023, Cohen Woodworking has partnered with 天涯社区log鈥檚 Center for Workforce Development through the Missouri One Start Customized Training Program. About 50 employees participate in training each year.

Specialized Work

Cohen Woodworking operates in a specialized industry. Few companies perform the same type of custom work, which limits the number of applicants who arrive with every required skill.

Rather than depend on an experienced labor pool, the company hires people with potential and develops their capabilities over time. This approach requires consistent instruction in technical processes, workplace safety, and leadership.

The company also promotes from within. As a result, employees need opportunities to prepare for expanded responsibilities while maintaining the quality customers expect.

Leadership Training

Through Missouri One Start and 天涯社区log鈥檚 Center for Workforce Development, Cohen Woodworking provides instruction based on its workforce needs.

Training has included:

• OSHA 10 construction certification
• Leadership development
• ERP software instruction
• Production skills
• Engineering-related coursework

These programs help employees strengthen job-specific knowledge while preparing for future roles within the company.

The partnership also supported Cameron Davis, Cohen Woodworking鈥檚 maintenance manager. Davis began an Industrial Engineering Technology apprenticeship at 天涯社区log鈥檚 Rolla campus in April 2021 while continuing to work full time.

The apprenticeship combined classroom instruction with hands-on experience. Davis completed a Certificate of Specialization in Industrial Maintenance in January 2023.

Supporting Advancement

Cohen Woodworking employees receive training each year through Missouri One Start funding. The instruction helps team members improve their technical, safety, and leadership skills. To maintain eligibility for Missouri One Start Customized Training funding, Cohen Woodworking has made capital investments, exceeding $480,000.

The company has also created clearer paths for internal advancement. Employees can prepare for leadership roles and take on greater responsibility as their experience grows.

Cohen Woodworking reports that consistent training has improved execution and quality. It has also helped the company pursue more complex and notable projects.

One example is the company鈥檚 work for 天涯社区log鈥檚 new Rolla facility. Cohen Woodworking was selected to create and install custom cabinetry, countertops, and furnishings throughout the location. This included spaces used by the Surgical Technology and Radiologic Technology departments.

Creating Opportunities

鈥淚 was blown away with the training Cameron received. That was my introduction to 天涯社区log,鈥� said Cohen Woodworking owner Nate Cohen.

鈥淚 love the IET program. So much has come out of it. It鈥檚 exciting to see what鈥檚 next,鈥� he added.

鈥淐onsistent training is one of the most practical investments we鈥檝e made,鈥� Cohen continued. 鈥淚t has improved our execution, quality, and provided a clear path for people to grow. We prioritize promoting from within, and that commitment has allowed us to develop leaders and advance team members. We鈥檝e been able to take on more complex and notable projects as a result of it.鈥�

鈥淎s an organization, we are fine bringing people in who don鈥檛 have training,鈥� he said. 鈥淔inding companies that do the work we do is pretty slim. What we do is more specialized.鈥�

鈥淲orkforce development begins with a belief in people and what they鈥檙e capable of achieving,鈥� said Todd Tracy, executive director of 天涯社区log鈥檚 Center for Workforce Development. 鈥淲hen individuals have the opportunity to grow their skills and advance in their careers, they don鈥檛 just strengthen a company, they help create a lasting impact.鈥�

Instead, it was her boss at Indoor Comfort Team.

A 90-year-old customer had called the HVAC company after reading online reviews. She wasn’t looking for an estimate.

She wanted the technician whose name kept appearing in five-star reviews: Sabrina McIntyre.

For the 26-year-old 天涯社区log graduate, it was one of those moments that confirmed she had chosen the right career.

Just a few months earlier, McIntyre completed 天涯社区log’s Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR) program.

McIntyre is a Metallica Scholar, and she was featured in an

Today, she spends her days diagnosing and repairing heating and cooling systems. When the workday ends, she’s often back on campus.

This time, she’s in the welding lab.

She’s not taking welding just to add another skill to her r茅sum茅. She has a plan. McIntyre wants to fabricate exhaust systems for commercial and industrial kitchens, a growing niche that also extends to high-end residential homes with commercial-style kitchens.

McIntyre, of Union, didn’t return because she needed another job. She returned because she’s building toward a bigger goal.

“I chose welding because I want to build exhaust systems for industrial kitchens,” she said. “A lot of people are starting to put industrial ovens in their homes. It’s a very profitable field to get into.”

She’s also working toward a business degree. Together, the three areas of study will help prepare her for what she hopes is the next chapter: opening her own business.

“My welding skills open more opportunities to build my career,” she said. “A business degree will help me better my career and give me more opportunities in the future.”

Combined with her business degree, the additional training is helping her build toward the ultimate goal of owning her own company.

McIntyre’s path to HVAC wasn’t a straight line.

She first enrolled at 天涯社区log at 17 to study business before putting college on hold after the birth of her daughter, Zoey. After returning to work, she realized she didn’t want to spend her career behind a desk.

Working as an insulator in the carpenters union introduced her to the HVAC trade.

“I saw the HVAC guys working and took an interest,” she said. “I decided to go back to school for HVAC.”

She liked that the trade offered stability and room to grow.

“It is a skill that will never go out of style,” she said. “It can transition into so many other industries.”

Two months after graduating, she was hired by Indoor Comfort Team.

Today, she enjoys solving problems, but what she enjoys most is helping people.

Her work has taken her into homes and businesses across the region, where she has earned a reputation for attention to detail, clear communication and putting customers at ease.

“I enjoy meeting all different types of people and genuinely helping them,” she said.

McIntyre knows some customers are surprised when she arrives at their door.

“As a woman in HVAC, I feel I am questioned as soon as I walk through the door,” she said. “But by the time I am done with the job, they would prefer me over most of the men they have met.”

She believes attention to detail, good communication and a willingness to listen have helped earn customers’ confidence.

Those same qualities helped her at 天涯社区log, where she was the only woman in her HVAC class.

“Being the only girl in the class, I had to insert myself into the groups,” she said. “The instructors were seasoned HVAC professionals, which made them good sounding boards.”

Balancing work, classes and family isn’t easy. McIntyre credits her husband for putting his own career on hold so she could continue pursuing hers.

“I never thought about stopping my education,” she said. “I feel like there is always something to learn.”

Looking ahead, she hopes to become a journeyman technician, continue adding skills and eventually open her own company. She’s even talked with 天涯社区log instructors about someday returning as an adjunct.

“It would be weird at first,” she said with a laugh. “But I think I could help students understand what to expect when they get into the field.”

She also hopes to continue learning. Even after earning her HVAC credential, McIntyre says she’d still like to take additional refrigeration and commercial HVAC courses if the opportunity arises.

For anyone considering a career in the skilled trades, her advice is simple.

“Do it,” she said. “Don’t let anyone intimidate you.”

The College will participate in the Accelerator for Community Colleges in the Innovation Economy Work-Based Learning Capacity-Building Cohort, led by New America’s Future of Work & Innovation Economy initiative and the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT), with support from the U.S. National Science Foundation.

As part of the initiative, 天涯社区log will receive a $20,000 award to support the project, along with technical assistance from national workforce development experts and opportunities to collaborate with peer institutions from across the country.

“Being selected for this national cohort reflects the work our faculty, staff and employer partners do every day to prepare students for successful careers,” 天涯社区log President Dr. Jon Bauer said. “We look forward to building on the strong work-based learning opportunities already available to our students while identifying new ways to serve them better.”

Work-Based Learning

Work-based learning connects classroom instruction with real-world experience through opportunities such as internships, apprenticeships, clinicals, practicums and cooperative education. These experiences help students develop career-ready skills while building relationships with employers before graduation.

Over the next year, 天涯社区log will complete a comprehensive self-study of its work-based learning efforts, gather feedback from employers and community partners, and develop a strategic plan to strengthen and expand opportunities for students.

The project also supports several of the College’s workforce development priorities, including strengthening employer partnerships, improving how work-based learning opportunities are assessed, and aligning those experiences with 天涯社区log’s growing microcredential initiatives.

Commitment

The six participating colleges were selected based on their commitment to expanding work-based learning, building strong employer partnerships and demonstrating the ability to implement long-term improvements.

In addition to funding and technical support, 天涯社区log will serve as a pilot partner in developing a national work-based learning self-study toolkit that will be shared with community colleges across the country.

The inaugural cohort includes 天涯社区log; City Colleges of Chicago, Illinois; Forsyth Technical Community College, North Carolina; Santa Fe College, Florida; SUNY Broome Community College, New York; and West Valley College, California.

The Learning Center has been recertified as a Level III Master Tutor program through the College Reading & Learning Association’s (CRLA) International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC).

The certification recognizes tutoring programs that meet rigorous international standards for tutor selection, training, direct service and evaluation. The designation is the highest level of certification awarded through the internationally recognized program.

天涯社区log’s Level III Master Tutor certification is valid through June 30, 2030. The certification follows a peer review of The Learning Center, affirming the College’s ongoing investment in high-quality academic support and student success.

“It is an honor to maintain CRLA Level III Master Tutor International Tutor Training Program certification,” said Erin Anglin, Executive Director of The Learning Center and Academic Support. “I am proud of the work we do and the work my Learning Center staff does to maintain the highest level of tutoring standards.”

The impact of those efforts is reflected in student outcomes. Students who receive tutoring three or more times during a semester are 65% more likely to earn an A, B or C in a course than students who use tutoring little or not at all. Over the past five years, The Learning Center has also increased its tutoring effectiveness by 10%.

Vondera’s mother, Robin, passed away in 2022 before Tonya entered the 天涯社区log Nursing program. A 1984 graduate of the Washington School of Practical Nursing, Robin spent nearly 40 years caring for patients in nursing homes, clinics, home health settings, and correctional facilities.

To honor her mother on graduation day, Tonya, of Union, planned to recreate Robin’s graduation photo while wearing her cap and gown and holding her mother’s portrait.

What she didn’t expect was a surprise from 天涯社区log Dean of Nursing Dr. Nancy Mitchell and Union Nursing Program Coordinator Dr. Brittany Clark.

The two located a vintage nursing cap from the nursing department that closely resembled the one Robin wore in her graduation photograph more than 40 years ago.

“The nursing cap was actually found in the depths of the nursing program closet,” Vondera said. “Dean Mitchell and Dr. Clark dug for it so I could match my mom in her graduation picture.”

With the cap in place, Tonya was able to recreate the photograph and honor the woman who inspired her nursing journey.

“I know how excited she would have been to be right there with me,” Tonya said. “She was my best friend. I wanted her there to see it. They made this picture perfect for me.”

Following in Her Footsteps

Tonya was able to share the news that she planned to become a nurse before her mother passed away.

“She was so excited she bought an IV practice kit for me that had a whole fake arm in it,” Tonya recalled.

More than anything, Tonya remembers the example her mother set.

“My mother poured herself into her patients, family, and friends,” she said. “She often left little for herself. She carried burdens she never talked about and pushed through exhaustion because someone else might need her.”

Tonya said her mother viewed nursing as more than a profession.

“She saw caring for others as a privilege, not an obligation,” she said.

A Lasting Influence

Those lessons stayed with Tonya as she worked through the challenges of nursing school. She credits her mother with teaching her perseverance, compassion, and the importance of advocating for both patients and her.

“She taught me to keep going when things get difficult,” Tonya said. “She taught me to care deeply for people and to speak up when something isn’t right.”

As she completed the nursing program at 天涯社区log, Tonya found support from faculty members who understood the significance of her mother’s influence and helped make graduation day even more meaningful.

The nursing cap was a small gesture, but one that carried tremendous meaning.

“It meant everything to me,” Tonya said. “They went out of their way to help me honor my mom.”

Now, as she begins her own nursing career, Tonya carries with her the lessons her mother taught and the example she set through a lifetime of caring for others.

Thanks to a vintage nursing cap, a cherished nursing pin, and a graduation photo recreated more than four decades later, she also has a lasting reminder of the bond they shared and the legacy she now carries forward.
